Signs you need an emergency root canal today
Inside every tooth, the nerve (the pulp) sits in a sealed chamber. Bacteria get in through a deep cavity or a crack, and the pulp swells with nowhere to go. That pressure is the pain. Our dentists look for:
- Pain that throbs on its own and gets worse when you lie down
- Heat sensitivity that keeps going after the hot drink is finished
- A tooth that hurts when you tap it or bite down
- A small pimple on the gum that drains a salty or bitter taste
- A tooth that has turned gray, often years after a knock to the mouth
- A cavity or crack the X-ray shows has reached the pulp
One sign runs the other way. A toothache that stops suddenly can mean the nerve has died, not healed, and the infection keeps growing quietly. What happens at your same-day visit
A root canal is done in a set order:
- Exam and X-ray. The X-ray confirms the pulp is involved and shows how many canals the tooth has. A cold test and light tapping confirm which tooth it is.
- Written quote. You see the price for the root canal, and for a crown if one is needed, before anything is started.
- Numbing. An inflamed nerve can take longer to numb. We wait, and we test before we begin.
- Cleaning the canals. A thin rubber sheet isolates the tooth. Through a small opening in the chewing surface, the nerve tissue is removed and each canal is cleaned, shaped and disinfected.
- Sealing. The canals are filled and the access hole sealed with a filling. When infection is heavy, medicine may be left inside the tooth and the work finished at a second visit.
Most back teeth need a crown afterward, because a tooth without its pulp is more likely to split under chewing force. Front teeth often need only the filling. When the X-ray shows the tooth can't be saved, our dentist says so, and our emergency tooth extraction page covers that path.
Cost of an emergency root canal in Osprey
For patients paying without insurance, the $99 covers the exam and the X-ray. The root canal is quoted separately and in writing. Front teeth usually have a single canal while molars have three or four, so which tooth it is drives the price. A crown, when needed, is quoted as its own line.

Our office is at 416 S Tamiami Trl Ste F4, Osprey, FL 34229, on US 41 (South Tamiami Trail), about a mile south of Historic Spanish Point. Patients from Palmer Ranch take Central Sarasota Parkway west to US 41 and turn south, about 8 to 12 minutes. From Nokomis, Albee Road or Colonia Lane to US 41 and then north through Laurel takes 10 to 15 minutes. South Sarasota patients follow US 41 south the whole way, through Gulf Gate and Vamo, in 14 to 20 minutes, and there's parking on site once you arrive.

Can it wait until next week?
The pain might ease, but the infection won't leave on its own. Left alone, it works down through the root into the bone and can become an abscess, which is a bigger problem to treat.
