The $99 is a minimum fee for patients paying without insurance. It covers a limited, problem-focused emergency exam (ADA code D0140) and the X-ray needed to diagnose the tooth. Treatment is priced separately and quoted to you in writing before any work starts.

What happens when you call on a weekend or after 4pm
During office hours, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the front desk answers and gives you a same-day time. Outside those hours, the line goes to an answering service. They're not dentists and they don't give medical advice. What they do is take your name, your phone number and a short description of the problem, and hold you the first opening on the next business morning.
Here's how that lands on the calendar:
- Call Friday at 6:00 PM, and you're held for Monday at 8:00 AM.
- Call any time Saturday or Sunday, and you're held for Monday at 8:00 AM.
- Call Monday at 9:00 PM, and you're held for Tuesday at 8:00 AM.
- Call Wednesday at 5:30 AM, and you're held for that same morning at 8:00 AM.
You don't need to call again when the office opens. The front desk sees your details first thing and expects you.
Managing tooth pain until Monday morning
These are common-sense measures, not treatment. They can make the wait more bearable while the tooth waits for a dentist.
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever the way the label says. Don't exceed the dose because the pain is bad; that adds risk without adding relief.
- Hold a cold compress against the cheek over the sore spot, on and off, to ease swelling and dull the ache.
- Rinse with warm salt water a few times a day, especially after eating, to keep the area clean.
- Chew on the other side and skip anything very hot, very cold, hard or sweet.
- Sleep with your head propped up. Lying flat tends to make a throbbing tooth throb harder.
- Don't press aspirin or any pill against the gum. It burns the tissue and doesn't reach the nerve.
A few problems call for something specific:
- A knocked-out tooth is most likely to go back in when it's kept moist and seen fast. Hold it by the crown, not the root, rinse off dirt gently without scrubbing, and try to slip it back into the socket. If that won't work, keep it in milk or in your cheek. - A broken tooth with a sharp edge can be covered with dental wax from a drugstore, or a bit of sugarless gum, so it stops cutting your tongue. See broken tooth repair.
- A crown that came off should go in a bag and come with you Monday. Many can be re-cemented. Details are on our lost filling or crown page.
- A swollen face or jaw points to an abscess. Cold compresses and rinsing help, but the infection needs to be drained and treated, so keep Monday's opening even if the swelling eases.
When to go to the emergency room this weekend
Most weekend toothaches can wait until Monday at 8:00 AM with the measures above. A few signs mean the problem has moved beyond the tooth and should be seen at a hospital right away:
- Swelling that spreads toward the eye or down the neck
- Trouble swallowing, opening your mouth or breathing
- A fever along with facial swelling
- Bleeding from the mouth that doesn't slow down with steady pressure after 20 minutes
- A fall, crash or blow that may have broken the jaw
Hospitals treat spreading infection and injuries; they generally don't treat the tooth itself. The nearest emergency room to Osprey is Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice at 2600 Laurel Rd E in North Venice, near Interstate 75, about 6 miles from us and 10 to 15 minutes by US 41 and Laurel Road. Once the hospital has handled the urgent part, call us so the tooth that started it can be treated.
Monday at 8:00 AM: what your visit looks like
Come in with a photo ID and your insurance card if you have one. A dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray, then tells you plainly what's wrong and what the options are. You get the treatment price in writing before anything starts. If you're paying without insurance, the exam and X-ray are $99, and the terms at the head of this page apply. Most weekend problems are treated at that first visit: toothache relief, extractions, root canals and abscess drainage among them. A crown that has to be made takes a second visit, and you'll know that before you decide.
Weekday evenings work the same way
The weekend rule isn't only for weekends. If your tooth breaks at dinner on a Tuesday, call that night. The answering service holds you the first opening Wednesday at 8:00 AM, which is earlier than most people expect to be seen. Calling at 8:00 AM sharp the next morning also works, but by then the day's openings are already being handed out, so the evening call gets you the earlier spot.

Is there an emergency dentist open on Sunday in Osprey?
Not our office. We're closed Saturday and Sunday, and we'd rather say so than have you drive over to a locked door. I'm here for the season. Does the weekend rule apply to visitors?
Yes, exactly the same. You don't need to be an established patient. Call, give your details, and you're held the first opening Monday at 8:00 AM. Bring a photo ID. If your PPO plan is from another state, have the plan name handy so the front desk can check it when they call you back.
Is a summer thunderstorm a reason to wait until it passes?
Only for the drive itself. Gulf Coast afternoon storms tend to be short, and an abscess or a knocked-out tooth doesn't improve while you wait one out. Call as soon as the problem starts, hold the opening, and drive over once the rain lets up. The office is on US 41 with parking on site, so there isn't a long walk in the wet.
