Signs you need lost filling or crown repair today
A filling fell out. You'll notice a hole, a rough edge your tongue keeps finding, and often a zing from cold or sweet. The tooth underneath is softer than enamel, and it wears fast without its cover.
A crown came off. It usually happens while chewing something sticky, and you find the crown in your food. The stump left behind is sensitive and fragile. If a piece of the tooth is still inside the crown, tell us on the phone; that repair is closer to what our broken tooth repair page describes.
A bridge is loose. A bridge is anchored on the teeth at either end. When one anchor loosens, the whole bridge rocks. It can often be re-cemented if the anchor teeth are sound underneath.
Same-day care matters when there's sharp pain from cold or air, a rough edge cutting the tongue, a crown missing from a front tooth, or a tooth that hurts on its own. Even if it doesn't hurt, an uncovered tooth picks up decay and can crack, so don't let it ride for weeks.
What happens at your same-day visit
An X-ray comes first, then a close look at the tooth: our dentist wants to know what's left underneath and whether there's decay or a crack. The repair follows from that.
- Lost filling: the tooth is cleaned out and a new filling is placed. If too much tooth is gone for a filling to hold, our dentist explains that a crown is the sound repair and quotes it.
- Lost crown: when the crown is in one piece and the tooth beneath it is healthy, we clean both and cement the crown back on. If the crown is cracked, no longer fits, or the tooth has decayed under it, a new crown is made, and a temporary protects the tooth in the meantime.
- Loose or broken bridge: if the anchor teeth are sound, the bridge is re-cemented. If an anchor tooth has failed, the bridge can't always be saved, and our dentist talks through what's possible.
Whichever repair it is, the price is written down before the work starts.
Cost of a lost filling or crown repair in Osprey
The exam and X-ray are $99 for patients paying without insurance. The fee for re-cementing a crown you already have differs from the fee for a new filling, which differs again from a new crown; each is quoted in writing before you decide. Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to glue a crown back on at home?
Not with household glue. Superglue and similar products aren't made for the mouth, and they make the crown hard to clean and hard to reseat properly. If you need something for a day, a drugstore temporary dental cement holds the crown in place until your visit. Otherwise keep the crown in a bag and bring it in.
How do I manage the tooth until my appointment?
Chew on the other side, brush gently around the spot and rinse with warm salt water. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet food on that tooth. If a rough edge is cutting your tongue, a bit of dental wax or sugarless gum pressed over it smooths things out until you're seen.
Can a broken bridge be repaired?
Sometimes. If the bridge came loose but is intact, and the anchor teeth are healthy, it's cleaned and re-cemented. If the porcelain has chipped, a small repair may be possible. If an anchor tooth has broken or decayed under the bridge, the bridge usually can't go back, and our dentist explains the next step once the emergency is handled.
