Facial swelling with fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing, belongs in an emergency room first. Hospitals treat spreading infection and injuries; they generally don't treat the tooth itself. Call us afterward for the tooth.

Pain in the jaw travels, and the tooth you point to isn't always the one that's sick. Our dentist takes an X-ray, then checks the suspect teeth one at a time: a cold test for the nerve, a light tap for the root, a bite on a small stick for cracks.
Then you hear the diagnosis and get a written price for the fix: a filling, a root canal, an extraction, draining an infection, or smoothing a filling that sits too high. We treat the cause at that visit whenever the tooth allows it. If a second appointment is needed, you leave with the pain controlled and the date set.

The safest choice is an over-the-counter pain reliever used the way its label says. Keep aspirin off the gum, where it burns the tissue. Something cold against the cheek, 15 minutes at a time, takes the edge off throbbing. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet foods on that side until you're seen.
Why is my toothache worse at night?
Lying flat sends more blood to the head, which pushes up the pressure inside an inflamed tooth, and with fewer distractions the pain gets your full attention. An extra pillow under your head helps a little. It doesn't fix the tooth, so call when we open at 8:00 AM.
The pain went away on its own. Should I still come in?
Yes. A toothache that fades on its own often means the nerve inside has died. The infection stays, works down into the bone, and can come back as swelling. An exam and X-ray show whether the tooth needs a root canal now, while it's still simple to treat.
