The question usually comes up late at night, when a molar has been pounding for hours and the only lit building on US 41 seems to be a hospital. The honest answer has two parts. Some dental problems belong in an emergency room tonight. Getting the tooth out is almost never one of them.
Why an emergency room usually can't pull a tooth
Taking out a tooth sounds simple. It isn't. Before a tooth comes out, a dentist needs a dental X-ray to see how many roots it has, which way they curve, and how close they sit to the nerve or the sinus. Then the work needs dental instruments, a dental chair, and a dentist licensed in Florida to do it. A back tooth that has broken off at the gum line may need to be removed in pieces, with the gum opened and a little bone smoothed. That's surgery, and it belongs in a dental office.
A hospital emergency room is built for a different job. Hospitals treat spreading infection and injuries; they generally don't treat the tooth itself. So even after a hospital visit, the tooth that started the trouble is still in your mouth, and the cause of the pain hasn't gone anywhere. The next stop is a dentist.
When the emergency room is the right place tonight
Some situations go past what a dental office handles. If any of these describe you, go to the hospital first and call us afterward:
- Swelling that makes it hard to breathe, swallow, or open your mouth fully
- Puffiness that is moving up toward your eye or down along your neck
- A tooth infection paired with a high temperature, chills, or a foggy head
- A hit to the face where the jaw may be fractured, you blacked out, or a wound needs stitching
- Mouth bleeding that keeps going after 20 to 30 minutes of steady pressure
The nearest emergency room to Osprey is Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice at 2600 Laurel Rd E in North Venice, near Interstate 75. It's about 6 miles from our office, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by way of US 41 and Laurel Road. Doctors Hospital of Sarasota on Bee Ridge Road is about 9 miles away, and Sarasota Memorial Hospital on South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota is about 10 miles north.

When the answer is a dentist, not a hospital
Nearly everything else. A tooth that throbs but hasn't swollen your face. A cracked or broken tooth. An abscess that's still limited to the gum and cheek. A crown that came off. A wisdom tooth flaring up. A tooth that got knocked out at the beach or on the Legacy Trail. Those are dental office problems, and our Osprey office handles all of them in-house, including emergency tooth extraction, abscess treatment, emergency root canals and knocked-out teeth.

What to do if you already went to the ER
Call us. Whatever the hospital did for the infection or the injury, the tooth that caused it still needs a dentist, and the sooner it's looked at, the fewer surprises later. Bring any paperwork the hospital gave you so our dentists know what you've been given and when. Then we take our own X-ray, examine the tooth, and tell you in writing what it needs.
How a same-day extraction works at our Osprey office
The visit starts with a phone call, never a walk-in. Call while we're open, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and the front desk fits you in that same day. Call outside those hours and the answering service writes down what's wrong and reserves the first slot for you, 8:00 AM on the next business day. We're at 416 S Tamiami Trl Ste F4, Osprey, FL 34229, on US 41 between Sarasota and Venice, with parking on site.
The $99 is a minimum fee for patients paying without insurance. It covers a limited, problem-focused emergency exam (ADA code D0140) and the X-ray needed to diagnose the tooth. Treatment is priced separately and quoted to you in writing before any work starts.
At the visit, our dentists look at the X-ray and the tooth and tell you whether it can be saved. If it can't, they explain the extraction, simple or surgical, and put the price on paper first. Getting through the night until 8:00 AM
Tonight, if it isn't a hospital night, a few things help. Rinse with warm salt water. Press something cold against the cheek, 15 minutes at a time. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever exactly as its label says, if your doctor allows it. Sleep with your head propped up, since lying flat tends to make a toothache pound harder. Can urgent care pull a tooth in Florida?
The same answer applies. An extraction is dental work, and urgent care clinics generally don't treat the tooth itself either. If your symptoms are on the hospital list above, go to the ER rather than urgent care. If they aren't, the fastest route to getting the tooth out is a dental office, so call us and we hold you a time.
Does a knocked-out tooth go to the hospital or the dentist?
The dentist, and quickly. Slip an adult tooth back into its socket when you're able, or drop it in milk, then phone us right away. The sooner it's back in, the more likely it stays; an hour out of the mouth makes a real difference. If the same accident hurt your head or jaw, the hospital comes first.
Do you pull wisdom teeth the same day?
